Portishead's 2008 album Third marked the end of their 11-year hiatus, which came as a surprise after their success in popularizing trip-hop with their debut album Dummy (1994). This English trio have created a dark and somber ambiance with their sound, comprised of their slow, moody feel, hip-hop-backed grooves and rhythms, topped with singer Beth Gibbon's dark, morose voice. "The Rip" is one of their best songs from their most recent album. This sad, lonely folk song crawls along in the emptiness of Gibbon's cries, until about halfway through the song, where the folk becomes lost amidst waves of synthesized melancholy, building up and picking up speed to the point where the isolation felt in the beginning has been replaced by an aura of surrounding, shared darkness.
